Evolution process of mobile phone

Do u have a mobile phone? This seems to be a stupid question to ask. Some people may have more than one phone for different affairs. Nowadays, mobile phone has already become an indispensable part in our life. We can find all kinds of phones with different designs and functions in the market. From the hulking FM radio telephone to the latest touch-screen Iphone with high High-definition camera, we saw a great changes have taken places mobile phones. But how did wireless communicators developed to what we get today? Here’s a brief clue with pictures:

In 1940, Galvin Manufacturing Corporation (later Motorola) engineers developed   SCR536 portable FM Handie-Talkie, which was widely used in World War II battlefronts.

In 1943, Galvin Manufacturing Corporation designed the world's first portable two-way FM radio, the SCR300 backpack model, for the U.S. Army Signal Corps. This walkie-talkie was 35 pounds weight and it had an effective Operating Range Up To of 10 to 20 miles.

This full automatic mobile phone was developed in Sweden in 1956. Using MTA communicating system, weighting 88 pounds, it was the first dial-type mobile phone without manual control.

In 1969, Mobile Communications Technology was applied to cruise cars and taxis, named “mobileers”. In fact, it was the same with what we called “interphone” today.

By 1973, Motorola demonstrated a prototype DynaTAC (DYNamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage) portable radiotelephone cellular system. The greatest technical development was its low-power and portability.

In 1982, Motorola produced the first portable mobile phone DynaTAC8000X, about 2 pounds weight and the unit price was about $3995. This was an optimization version of the previous one. This first portable mobile phone boasted one hour of talk time and eight hours of standby time, besides, 30 phone numbers can be stored in it. This seems quite common and even backward now, however, at that time, it was really an amazing improvement.

This was the first on-board phones developed by Nokia in 1982. It was 10.5 kg weight and has stereo system installed---A prospective mobile communicator actually.

This one born in 1993 has functions similar to a Palmtop computer, weighing 560g, and was sold at the price of $900. It has all the functions of Beep-Pager, calculator, address list, and electrograph. This phone was produced and marketed by Bellsouth and IBM.

Most people will be more familiar with this one, and maybe some of you still have collection of this one---Motorola's StarTAC. This wearable cellular telephone was the world's smallest and lightest phone at that time (weighed just 3.1 ounces, 88 grams). and its flip design attracted lots of people. It looked pretty cool with such a new designed and small mobile phone at that time.

Nokia 6160, 5.2 inch height and about 168g weight, with monochrome screen, exterior antenna, and this one became the most popular mobile phone of Nokia in 1990s.

This smartphone QCP6035 with 8MB memory card was produced by Kyocera. It is specifically aim at individual users. It was available to customers in 2001, at the price about $500.

The first flip mobile phone with Dual-input methods was published in 2001 as well. It has a 16MB memory, and both of Qwerty keyboard input and handwriting input are available on it.

This one won the reputation of “Best New Product” in 2003.  It was the fist substantial mobile internet prototype. You can browse website, receive & send emails and use IM software with this danger hiptop.

In the year of 2002, Sanyo, together with Sprint, introduced this SCP-5300, which was the first mobile phone with camera. It can take photos of 640*480 pixels. Although we can take photos at millions pixels with most of our mobile phones now, it still a great creativity at that time.

You can say it is either a mobile phone or a game machine. This Nokia N-gage got lots of critiques when it was first introduced in 2003 because of its strange appearance. Some people thought the weird appearance destroyed the beauty of mobile phone, however, it was still popular at that time, especially among youngsters.

Motorola Rokr---released in the year of 2005. It was the first music phone with Apple iTunes software inside. You can store almost 100 songs on the memory card.

Iphone, wikipedia has the most accurate definition: “an internet-connected multimedia smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. with a flush multi-touch screen and a minimal hardware interface”. It was formally introduced in the US on June 29, 2007. Don’t need much introduction about this one, the fact is that innumerability people are crazy and addicts to it.
