DVD Format War OVER!!! Toshiba Quits

In a stunning move, Toshiba announced this morning in an official press release that they would no longer be producing HD DVDs or HD DVD players.

Official Press Release Here

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida,

I'm really, really surprised, but just hopes this helps move things along to being a Blu-Ray friendly world, where hopefully prices will drop. Surely manufacturers will now be able to bring the players and DVDs to every consumer at an affordable rate.

Now, don't go out and buy a Blu-Ray player, because there is a definite possibility that current generation Blu-Ray players will not play next generation Blu-Ray DVDs. PS3 users will have the ability to update their firmware to adapt to thew new, new Blu-Ray format, but others won't be so lucky.

That being said, I'm sticking with my beta max, for now.

Haha, beta. I'll stick with VHS and DVD until the latter is almost fully replaced - hopefully with something a little more groundbreaking than Blu-ray. Who knows, maybe non physical will be the future.

It was about time, to me it was ridicule that the media with the most space would not win, congrats Blu+Ray you rocks!

If anyone is going to produce a viable BD player in the short term, it will probably be Sony - as announced at the CES.  NewEgg - please carry this!

Even though Blue-ray wins hands down over DVD, but the problem with durability in handling the disc. Scratches associate with Blue-ray disc is a bigger problem than conventional DVD.

Just because HD DVD pulled out does not mean that Blu Ray will "Make It". Does anyone remember SACD or DVD Audio. For PC stoarage we might have something but it is going to take a lot to get John Q Public to start to spend more for something he cannot perceive. Most people cannot even see the difference in Blu Ray or DVD. I hope it works even though I already have HD Dvd, but I am pessimistic about the public.

I'll stick with flash drives, CDs, ect...Who cares about DVD's when you have software hacks to up the resolution to HD quality!?

And Blu-Ray's? Bahhumbug!

Lol, J/K...
