CAGG Labs

Community Uber and active user CheapAsianGamerGuy presents the following new forum idea:

“ 'CAGG Labs'…whose purpose would be to post work logs and pics/screenshots of projects done by EggXpert.com users. A sort of end-to-end how to, from build requests to order to finished product(s) and even OC/tuning. A forum for people to post their works in progress and share their build process and philosophies with the rest of the community. I'd start out by being a contributor along with a few other users who want to fulfill different roles (part/build recommendations, etc).

I'd like to keep the focus on posting projects and (recommended) build specs.

CAGG Labs Concept:

Visible to all.

Two Stickied Threads to start:

  1. Rules - Ground rules TBD, but pics and any form (however rough) of work log are mandatory - Thread Locked?
  2. Proposals/Pitches - Open thread for System Build Specs, build proposals, Project pitches, and discussion of projects. (This is where we separate the people who just talk about building from people who really want to do a build)

Workflow:

Once a Project is "greenlit" through discussion in the Proposals thread, a thread is created for the user who can choose to make it himself only, himself and mods, or any-user postable. Once a project is complete, user has option to lock the thread.

Example:

Proposals Thread -

Root: I wanna build a server!

(Specs are traded for a few posts)

Root: I bought the parts!

Me: Wanna project thread?

Root: Heck yeah!

Project: Rootserver Thread -

Root: Hey everyone, I'm building a new server! I just ordered the parts! (Partslist)

(User continues to post as project continues to completion)”

We may even give the best project presentation a spot on the monthly newsletter and the winner a coveted prize. Any opinions, brainstorming and feedback are welcome as we try and figure out if this can be done and if it has enough widespread interest to be worth pursuing. What do you guys think?

Just about every Forum has a modding/building section. (they get very drawn out)

I think it may be more useful to just have a gallery of comp picts (Just picts no replies) so others could benefit from ideas. (maybe limited to 2 or 3 picts of each comp)

I think time would be better spent on a series of How-Tos. Where people submit how they painted, wired, cooled or for the more adventurous designed their cases. Than the staff could select the article that is full of the most useful info and post it.

I think it's excellent. I was going to do basically this on a thread in the system builds section as I put my comp together, and another in OCing section when I get to that. Just a sort of specific "how-to" with pictures.

Interesting, I'd be more then interest to help when it comes to Part Recommendation, System Build's, Ect...That's always been my specialty...Give me a budget, and a preference, and I can help!

I like the idea of a work log, and a step by step process with comments on the 'why'. Sure there are a number of modding sites out there that do this all ready but our user base (for the most part) is the closeted Geeks. They don't know how to build computers yet, or don't know enough to built it from scratch, but want to know how. This could also be good for the seasoned veterans, about the different types of machines there are (gaming, <enter application> server, etc) as well as the true cosmetic 'mods' of coolness. But I think the biggest cool factor, as many have mentioned, is the pictures of the end result.

Yes the posting builds is a good idea but about half of these noobs don't know the first thing about building let alone researching a build. We need to educate them a little first, get the basics explained IE PSU so many dont understand the purpose of the rails let alone how much power is needed to operate what componet, then there's Ram the different speeds, the different FSB's and on and on need I say more. the fact that we answer the same ?'s time and time again. Set up a blog that does this and you'll have more time for the real help ?'s and projects like setting up build sites. Just a thought. take it for what its worth.
