Energy Drinks and Gaming.....

Are energy and high caffeine beverages really that good for you? Do they enhance performance at the next Lanfest? What's the alternative?

Energy Drinks and Gaming....Caffeine and Sugar

Most of the energy drinks on the market have two things in common, caffeine and some form of sugar.  The most common form of sugar found in soft drinks is high fructose in syrup form.  Caffeine, whether derived naturally or not, no matter how its added is still teeth nashing caffeine....

Some brands just go for the caffeine and sugar rush, others take the "higher" path and add amino acids, vitamins and extracts along with the sugar and caffeine.

So all that sugar and caffeine is a good thing right!? Does the short term boost really help concentration and stamina?

Ingesting large amounts of sugar is not a good thing, as "Martha" would say.  It raises the glucose, insulin and glycogen levels in the blood stream to a very high level.  Giving you a temporary feeling of euphoria, but will leave you feeling fatigued and drained a short time later.  Just your bodies natural defense to regulate itself.

Drinking large amounts of caffeine has been found by numerous studies to block absorption of some vitamins and minerals. The worst effect is it dehydrates the body. Not good!

So what is the alternative for that all nighter intense Lanfest?

Get a juicer!  Yup, I know, how hippy of me, but listen....

For the fraction of what you would pay for all that canned buzz you can make your own healthy alternative!

Recipe:

2 apples

6 Carrots

1/2 cup of Fresh Orange Juice

1 inch piece of fresh ginger (brain power)

large pinch of sea salt

large pinch of Electrolytes (found at the health store)

1 cup fresh brewed green tea, mild (I know its caffeine, but just a little..)

Pinch of buffered vitamin C powder

Juice the apple, ginger and carrots, add the juices, vitamin C, salt and tea to a blender, add ice and blend.  Makes aprox. 24oz.

Now the ideal thing would be to eat fresh veggies and fruit for good health, but this sure beats Super BuzzXXX....

If you don't want to go through the trouble of making this concoction up and people laughing at you as you pull a tupperware jug out of a cooler at the Fest....

Buy V8 juice, OJ, Cranberry Juice, Smoothies anything that does not have added sugar.

Chow,

Very good post.

I've seen gamers sucking down Red Bull and Bawls while sucking on pure sugar cubes.  Needless to say my BF2 team of mostly grade schoolers who don't drink caffine kill em every time.

I prefer gaming on the verge of death. No sleep, drink or food. I fight with a level of desperation that no Red Bull can imitate.

During the time we were browsing in the gift shop, I noticed that among the toys for sale were golliwogs of various sizes, in various colourful outfits. Given their notoriety as racist, unacceptable and politically incorrect toys from the past, I was
